Professor Nick Hoogenraad AO

Professor Hoogenraad was the Head of the School of Molecular Sciences and the Executive Director of the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) at La Trobe University until his retirement at the end of 2014 when he was appointed an Emeritus Professor. He has an international reputation for his work on mitochondrial biogenesis and has won a number of major prizes for this work. He has served on many national bodies, having served as President of the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, founder of the Australian Biochemist and originator of the ComBio Conference. He was the Chair of the local organizing committee of the International Congress of the International Union of Biology & Molecular Biology IUBMB, held in Melbourne in 2010. His lab made the important discovery of cause of Cancer Cachexia, a condition that effects up to 80% of patients with advanced cancer. A therapeutic antibody has been produced which shows great promise and recently a new start-up company, Limos Therapeutics Pty Ltd has been established to bring this treatment to clinical trials in humans with cachexia. This work is a major collaboration with the Olivia Newton-john cancer research Institute.
