Late last month the Victorian State Government unveiled the design plans for Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre’s (MCEC) expansion, which completes the vision for the venue and the entire South Wharf precinct as a vibrant events and entertainment destination.
The project will add nearly 20,000 square metres of flexible, multi-purpose event space including new exhibition halls and additional meeting and banquet rooms, as well as a 341 room hotel and multi-level car park. It will be fully connected and integrated with the existing venue, increasing its total size to over 70,000 square metres.
The expansion is expected to attract an additional 74,000 international visitors to Melbourne each year, providing an estimated $167 million annual boost to the Victorian economy. Its construction will create an additional 700 jobs, and once complete, will add over 900 ongoing jobs to the economy.
With a greater range of multi-purpose spaces, MCEC will be able to attract new events to Melbourne while allowing existing customers to grow their events. This significant project will ensure Melbourne remains a world leader in the business events industry, and continues to provide even more economic and social benefits to the state of Victoria.
